Waymo vs Tesla robotaxi: the honest scoreboard
The Waymo-versus-Tesla argument usually collapses into a sensor debate. That's the least useful lens. The useful ones are three: what's actually deployed, what each company is betting, and — the one that matters if you're reading a depot company's blog — which network an individual can actually own a piece of.

Read plainly: Waymo leads deployment by roughly two orders of magnitude — about 580× the driverless mileage, and a fleet a hundred times larger than what trackers can count on Tesla's network. Two engineering bets, honestly stated
Waymo's bet: redundant sensing (lidar + radar + cameras), high-definition maps, and methodical city-by-city operational depth. It's expensive per vehicle and slow per city — and it's the approach with 220 million miles of evidence behind it.
Tesla's bet: cameras plus end-to-end neural networks, no HD-map dependency, and — the part that actually distinguishes it — manufacturing. The purpose-built Cybercab (two seats, no steering wheel, EPA-filed specs here) is designed to be stamped out in volume at a target price under $30,000, against a Waymo vehicle whose sensor stack alone is widely estimated to cost more than that. The difference that matters to owners: you can't buy a Waymo
Here's the lens this blog exists for. Waymo owns its fleet. There is no path for an individual to buy a Waymo, put it on the network, and collect its fares — the closest proxy is Alphabet stock. Whatever Waymo's robotaxis earn, they earn for Alphabet.
Tesla's stated model is the opposite: individually owned Cybercabs earning on Tesla's network — the "Airbnb of cars" framing Tesla has used since the 2024 unveil. That's the entire reason an ownership economy (and a depot industry to serve it) exists on one side of this comparison and not the other. The honest caveats ride along: you can't order one yet, no owner cohort has published earnings, and the investment case is unproven — we say so every time. But the structural fact stands: one network is a closed fleet; the other is designed to be owned in pieces, by title-holding individuals (how the ownership options compare: fractional vs. direct).
What both sides agree on: the ground layer
Strip away the sensor debate and both architectures need the same unglamorous thing: physical infrastructure where cars park, charge, get cleaned, and stage between rides. Waymo solves it with company-run depots and contracted fleet-operations partners in each metro — a cost Alphabet pays. Tesla's ownership model externalizes that need to the owners — which is precisely where depots like ours come in, and why we build in metros where the ownership era lands first.
