What the Robotaxi app shows when your Cybercab arrives: the color, the arrow, and the clock

Honesty note: this post reads one screenshot. It was posted by a well-sourced Tesla watcher, not by Tesla, a few hours before the September 3 launch event, and the app update behind it was reported the same morning. We say what is on the screen, where each piece came from, and what it means for someone who plans to own the car. Anything Tesla has not said is marked as such.

At 11:04 AM Eastern on September 3, about seven hours before Tesla’s Cybercab livestream, Sawyer Merritt posted a screenshot of the Robotaxi app’s arrival screen with a two-sentence caption: the screen glows to match whatever color the Cybercab’s RGB front light bar is showing, an arrow points to where the car is, and you can flash the lights or honk the horn to identify it (@SawyerMerritt, Sep 3). The post had passed 360,000 views by mid-afternoon and was reposted to r/teslamotors within the hour (r/teslamotors thread), where the top comment made the point this post is about: the color-matched light bar is the smart part, because it is exactly the problem Uber has in a crowded pickup zone.

Here is what the screen shows, top to bottom. A phone display washed in teal. The color is the whole idea

The light bar was not a surprise. A purple one was spotted in late August, and by August 30 there was video from downtown Austin of two Cybercabs in a row, one glowing amber-orange and the one behind it emerald green (Not a Tesla App, Aug 30). Teslarati read the purpose correctly three days earlier: the color would show in the app so that riders standing in the same spot could tell whose car was whose (Teslarati, Aug 27). The September 3 screenshot is that guess confirmed.

The idea itself is a decade old. Uber shipped Beacon in December 2016, a logo-shaped LED that stuck to the driver’s windshield and lit up in a color the rider picked from a wheel in the app (TechCrunch, Dec 15, 2016). Lyft’s Amp did the same thing with a randomly assigned color. Waymo went the other way and shows the rider’s initials on the roof dome while the car waits (Waymo, Apr 2021). What Tesla changed is where the beacon lives. There is no dongle. The car’s own front lighting is the signal, which is only possible when you build the car for the job.

Uber solved the crowded curb with a light stuck to a windshield. Tesla solved it by making the whole front of the car the light.

Two things the thread asked that nobody has answered. The second comment on Reddit wanted to know whether the rider chooses the color or the app assigns one so that no two cars nearby match; the screenshot shows the color and no picker, and Tesla has not said. The top comment wondered how well a colored bar reads in bright daylight; the Austin sightings were all at night, and Tesla has not said that either. There is also a regulatory edge: forward-facing red and blue are restricted on public roads because they read as emergency vehicles, so the palette may be narrower than a full color wheel. Tesla has said nothing about that, and we will not guess.

The arrow, the distance, and the plate

Color gets you to the right cluster of cars. The rest of the screen gets you to the door. The arrow rotates toward the vehicle and the distance counts down in feet, which is a walking-distance figure rather than a driving one; this is a screen built for the last twenty feet, not the last two blocks. Tesla has not said how the distance is measured. The plate is printed in full, which is a standard rideshare cue that is more useful than it looks: the light bar identifies the car from across a plaza, the plate identifies it at arm’s length.

For an owner, the plate line is the one to notice. It is your plate. The car in the network is styled by Tesla, colored by Tesla’s app, and dispatched by Tesla, but the registration that a rider double-checks before getting in is the owner’s. That is the shape of the customer-owned fleet Tesla described in its filings and has not yet opened (the Tesla Network, explained): the network carries the brand, the owner carries the title.

“Vehicle Leaving Soon”: the line an owner should read twice

Every other element on the screen helps the rider. This one helps the fleet. A status that says the car is about to leave means the car will not wait indefinitely, and a car that will not wait is a car protecting its utilization. Uber and Lyft both charge riders for making a driver wait past a grace period; a robotaxi has no driver to compensate, but it has the same idle cost, because a car sitting at a curb is a car not on a fare.

What Tesla has not published is the number. The Robotaxi terms of service were updated on September 3 to cover the Cybercab, and the substantive change is age rules: nobody under 13 in a Cybercab, versus under 8 for a Model Y (TeslaNorth, Sep 3). Nothing in the terms says how long a car waits, whether a no-show is charged, or whether that charge would flow to a private owner someday. On Tesla’s reported Austin fare card, a base fare plus a per-mile rate, there is no waiting component at all (the fare ledger). If a private owner is ever paid per mile, the minutes a rider spends finding the car are minutes the owner pays for. That is why the color, the arrow and the honk exist: every second shaved off the curb goes straight to the car’s rides per day.

Flash and honk are fleet commands

The two buttons at the bottom of the screen are not new to Tesla. Flash lights and honk horn have been in the Tesla app for years, and they are exposed to third-party fleet software through the Fleet API’s vehicle-commands scope, the same scope that covers lock, unlock, climate and the trunk. What is new is putting them in a rider’s hand for a car the rider does not own.

We know these commands because we use them. The DockDuty owner dashboard sends flash and honk to a connected car today, alongside lock, unlock, and the rest, and every command is logged against the owner’s account (the demo dashboard shows the controls with sample fleet data). The reason is the same one Tesla had: in a building with fifty stalls, “which one is #37” is the curb problem moved indoors. A car that can flash on request is a car a dock hand can find in the dark without reading fifty plates. The rider’s screen and the depot’s screen are asking the car the same question.

What Tesla has not said

  1. Who picks the color. Rider, app, or random. The screenshot shows no picker.
  2. Whether the bar reads in daylight. Every sighting so far has been at night.
  3. The palette. Forward-facing red and blue are restricted on public roads. Whether Tesla excludes them, and where, is unstated.
  4. How long “soon” is. No wait limit, no no-show fee, nothing in the September 3 terms.
  5. Whether honk is limited at night. A rider-triggered horn at 2 AM in a residential pickup zone is a complaint waiting to happen. No stated rule.
  6. What a private owner sees. There is no owner program yet (the launch tracker). Whether an owner’s app would show these same pickups, or only the network’s, is unknown.

The owner’s footnote

One screenshot does not change the case for owning a Cybercab, but it does show what the car looks like from the rider’s side of the glass: a colored light, a walking arrow, a plate, and a clock. Three of the four belong to the network. The plate belongs to you. The clock is the one to keep an eye on, because the same logic that hurries a rider to the curb is the logic that decides how many fares your car gives in a day, and nobody has published the number yet.
