Where the robotaxis run in Tampa
Tesla. Local reporting puts Tesla’s Tampa area at 25 to 45 square miles, centered on downtown, Ybor City, Tampa Heights, West Tampa and parts of East Tampa, and says Tampa International Airport is not served (FOX 13, July 22, 2026). Not a Tesla App reported a much smaller footprint at launch, about 4 to 5 square miles (July 21, 2026).
Waymo. Waymo’s initial area covers nearly 50 square miles, including Hyde Park, Westshore, Water Street and Ybor City, with stops such as Raymond James Stadium and Amalie Arena (FOX 13, September 3, 2026).
Fares. No Tampa fare has been published. Orlando launch coverage reported Tesla’s fare as a $3.25 base plus about $1.00 per mile (FOX 35 Orlando, July 22, 2026).
A Waymo facility. Waymo is reported to be leasing a 100,698 square foot building at 6111 Johns Road, about two miles from Tampa International Airport, as warehouse space. The landlord did not name the tenant; the Tampa Bay Business Journal reported that it is Waymo (REBusiness, June 18, 2026).

What Florida law allows
Florida does not require a licensed human operator, or anyone on board, for a fully autonomous vehicle (FS §316.85(1)–(2)). Local governments cannot add taxes, fees or for-hire rules for autonomous vehicles, but airports and seaports can charge reasonable fees and designate staging and pickup locations (FS §316.85(6)).
