How many Cybercabs has Tesla built? The production ledger

The obligatory honesty note: we sell depot stalls to future Cybercab owners, so a big production number is good for us. The number below is not big. Every figure here is somebody else’s count, dated and linked, and the one thing we are sure of is that Tesla has never published its own.

“How many Cybercabs has Tesla built” is a question with a real answer that nobody outside Tesla knows. What exists instead is a trail of photographs, a state database, and a handful of sentences from earnings calls. Put in date order, they say more than any one of them does alone. Here is the ledger as of September 2, 2026, the day before Tesla’s Cybercab launch event in Austin.

What each kind of count actually measures

Three different things get called “how many Cybercabs,” and they do not agree with each other because they are not measuring the same thing.

Lot counts are a photograph of one place on one day. They miss every car that has already left, which by June included roughly 50 in Dallas and the validation fleets spotted in Austin and the Bay Area, so they run low as a total. They also include cars that will never carry a passenger: crash-test units, and the early builds that still had steering wheels. Two flyovers a month apart can move up or down without production changing at all, because cars ship out.

Registrations are the opposite. Forty-five cars in a state motor-carrier database is not a build number; it is an intent number. Tesla registers a vehicle to its robotaxi fleet when it plans to carry passengers in it. So 45 is the floor for “cars Tesla is about to put in service,” and says nothing about the other 200-odd that were photographed in July.

Tesla’s own statements are about capacity and direction, never units. “Above 125,000 a year” is what the line could do at full speed. “Very slow” is what it is doing. The gap between those two phrases is the whole story of 2026, and Tesla has not put a number in it.

Roughly 250 built by mid-July, 45 registered by the end of August, and zero owned by anyone but Tesla. Those are three different numbers, and all three are true.

How fast is the line running? A labeled back-of-envelope

Nobody outside Tesla knows, so treat this paragraph as arithmetic, not reporting. Continuous production began in late April. About 250 finished cars were visible on July 18, roughly 13 weeks later. If every one of those was built in that window, the line averaged something like 15 to 20 cars a week. The real figure is higher, because cars had already shipped to Dallas and elsewhere, and lower in the early weeks, because Musk said it would be. Call it low double digits a week through spring and summer.

For scale: Tesla’s stated capacity of 125,000 a year works out to about 2,400 a week. In April, Teslarati reported Tesla’s target of eventually “hundreds of units per week.” So the line was running at a small fraction of what it is built for, which is exactly what “very slow, then exponential toward the end of the year” describes. July’s walk-back on 2026 volume production moved the “end of the year” part, not the shape.

Why the count matters to someone who wants to own one

Because every unit on that ledger belongs to Tesla. There is no order book, no configurator, and no consumer price as of September 2, 2026; our buying-status page tracks that claim by claim. Musk’s on-record target is consumer sales under $30,000, reaffirmed in February 2026. Electrek reported on July 6 that the car will not be sold to consumers in the foreseeable future because early production feeds Tesla’s own network.

That is the honest logic chain: private allocation needs a production rate that has already satisfied Tesla’s own fleet demand. The fleet is 269 Model Ys and 45 Cybercabs in Texas today, with seven metros to fill and Nevada approved for up to 5,000 vehicles. A line running in the low double digits a week does not get past that queue in 2026. A line running in the hundreds might in 2027. The build count is the earliest public signal of which one you are looking at, which is why we keep this page instead of guessing.

The positive version, which is also true: eighteen months ago the Cybercab was twenty hand-built prototypes on a movie lot. Today there are a couple of hundred production cars, 45 of them registered to carry the public, and a factory line with six-figure annual capacity behind them. It has said initial output would be very slow and ramp toward the end of 2026, and its Q2 2026 update lists installed annual capacity above 125,000 units at Giga Texas. A back-of-envelope from the outside counts, roughly 250 cars staged about 13 weeks after continuous production began, implies something on the order of 15 to 20 cars a week over that window. That is a derived estimate from incomplete counts, not a Tesla figure. On July 22, 2026 Tesla said it no longer expects volume production in 2026.

When will private buyers be able to get a Cybercab?

No date exists. Every Cybercab built so far belongs to Tesla. Musk’s on-record target is consumer sales under $30,000, reaffirmed in February 2026, but Electrek reported on July 6, 2026 that the car won’t be sold to consumers in the foreseeable future, and Tesla walked back 2026 volume production on July 22. A production rate that reaches past Tesla’s own fleet needs is the prerequisite for private allocation, which is why the build count matters to would-be owners.

Where is the Cybercab built?

At Gigafactory Texas in Austin, on Tesla’s new “unboxed” assembly process. The first production unit came off the line on February 17, 2026. Tesla’s Q2 2026 update lists installed Cybercab capacity above 125,000 units a year at that site. No second Cybercab plant has been announced.
