What Tesla’s first robotaxi launch tells you about tomorrow’s Cybercab launch

Tesla has done this once before. On June 22, 2025 it switched on a robotaxi service in Austin that was, by any measure, tiny: about ten Model Ys, a $4.20 flat fare chosen for the joke, a Tesla employee in the front passenger seat, and a service area limited to the parts of the city Tesla said it considered safest (Fortune, Jun 22, 2025; CNBC, Jun 20, 2025). Riders were invited. Everyone else watched the videos.
That launch is the best available guide to tomorrow’s, because it is the only one Tesla has ever done. Here is what it became.

Read down the table and the shape is plain: start small and invited, keep a human within reach, widen the zone in steps, add cities in waves, remove the human when the data allows, then raise the price. Fourteen months from ten cars to seven metros is fast by the standards of anyone except Waymo, which had a decade’s head start and reports more than 4,000 vehicles today.
How big is the fleet now? Two honest numbers
This matters for tomorrow because Tesla will almost certainly say a number, and two outside counts disagree about what the right one is. Teslarati, citing the crowdsourced Robotaxi Tracker, reported on August 31 that Tesla had nearly 200 vehicles operating without a safety monitor across Austin, Dallas and Houston, roughly seven times the count three weeks earlier (Teslarati, Aug 31). Electrek’s Fred Lambert, three days earlier, wrote that tracking had never shown more than about 50 vehicles active in a single week, with genuinely driverless operation peaking around 25 (Electrek, Aug 28).
Those are not contradictory so much as different measures taken days apart during a surge: cars registered or observed versus cars active in a given week. The lesson for tomorrow is the one Lambert draws: watch the road, not the stage. A cumulative number on a slide (“built,” “deployed,” “on the network”) is not the same as cars carrying paying passengers this week. Our Cybercab production ledger keeps those columns apart.
What to expect tomorrow, if the pattern holds
- Small and invited first. Attendees ride September 3. Reporting expects the public to follow within days (Electrek, Aug 24). In 2025 the invite phase lasted weeks.
- A slice of the zone, not all of it. The Model Y fleet runs about 264 square miles. A new vehicle with new failure modes probably starts on a subset and widens in steps, the way the 2025 zone did. Tesla has not said.
- Remote operators, not a monitor. The Cybercab has two seats and no wheel, so the 2025 fallback (a person in the passenger seat) is physically unavailable. What remains is the remote-assistance layer Tesla described to a US senator this spring: temporary control at 2 mph, up to 10 mph where the software permits (explained here).
- A number on a slide. Lambert predicts a “1,000-plus” figure. Whatever the number, ask which column it belongs in.
Four ways this launch is different
- No driver station to fall back on. A Model Y robotaxi can be driven home by a person if it has to be. A Cybercab cannot. That raises the bar for the software and for the recovery plan, and it is why the car’s federal status (self-certified to safety standards, per Tesla’s Lars Moravy on the April 22 call, with no exemption cap) matters more than it did for the Model Y (Electrek, Apr 23).
- No seat for a monitor. The 2025 launch could put a human in the car. Two seats means every Cybercab ride is fully unsupervised from the first public trip.
- No consumer version. Every Model Y robotaxi is a car you could buy. Every Cybercab belongs to Tesla, there is no order book, and Electrek reported on July 6 that Tesla does not plan to sell it to consumers in the foreseeable future. The 2025 launch was a service launch for a product that existed; tomorrow is a service launch for a product you cannot get.
- The scaling already happened. The Cybercab does not have to build a service. It joins one with hours, a zone, a fare card, remote operations and 269 Model Ys already in it. That is why 45 cars can mean more tomorrow than ten did in 2025, and why the growth curve could be steeper if the car holds up.
The ownership footnote
Fourteen months of the 2025 launch produced seven metros and, so far, zero customer-owned robotaxis. Tesla’s September 2025 proxy filing described the concept of owners adding their cars to the network; no terms, split, or date has followed (the ten-year history). If tomorrow follows the 2025 pattern, it will be a fleet milestone that is real and an ownership milestone that has not happened yet.
