“Unsupervised FSD” is the phrase doing the most work in every Tesla robotaxi headline this year, and it is routinely used as if it meant the same thing as the FSD in a customer's Model Y. It does not. The gap between the two versions — who is responsible for the drive — is the entire robotaxi business model, so it is worth being precise about what unsupervised FSD is, exactly where it runs, and what stands between a customer-owned car and ever having it.

Supervised vs. unsupervised: who answers for the drive

The version sold to customers is named FSD (Supervised), and the name is the contract: the car steers, brakes, and navigates, but a licensed, attentive human must sit in the driver's seat, ready to take over — and that human is responsible for the drive. Every customer Tesla on the road today, whatever its hardware, operates under that arrangement.

Unsupervised FSD removes the human from the loop: nobody in the driver's seat, no in-car safety monitor, the company answering for the vehicle's behavior. That is not an incremental software setting; it is a different legal and operational category, which is why it exists only where regulators have cleared it and only inside Tesla's own robotaxi fleet, dispatched through the Robotaxi app. As of August 2026, no customer-owned Tesla anywhere is permitted to operate unsupervised.
