What does robotaxi maintenance actually cost?
Ask what a robotaxi earns and you'll get a dozen confident spreadsheets. Ask what it costs to keep one running and the answers go vague fast. Here is everything actually on the record as of September 2026: the EV baseline, Tesla's one number, the high-mileage fleet evidence, and the line item almost every model forgets.
The baseline: EVs genuinely cost less to maintain
Consumer Reports analyzed maintenance and repair data from thousands of its members in 2020 and found battery-EV owners paying about half: roughly $0.03 per mile over the life of the car versus about $0.06 for gas — around $4,600 in lifetime savings.
AAA's September 2025 Your Driving Costs study found a narrower gap: EV maintenance and repair at 10.07¢ per mile against an 11.04¢ all-vehicle average, and an EV sedan at $1,358 a year versus $1,786 for a comparable gas sedan at 15,000 miles a year.
Notice the two studies disagree on the size of the advantage — AAA's new-car window shows a 10–24% edge depending on the cut; CR's lifetime survey found roughly 50%. That's a methodology gap: new cars of every kind need little work, so the EV edge compounds with age. The honest version: the advantage is real, its size is fuzzy, and neither study measured anything like a robotaxi duty cycle — stop-start urban work all day with strangers in the back. Nobody has published that data. Not Tesla, not Waymo, not anyone.
Tesla's number: twenty cents a mile
The only cost figure Tesla has attached to the Cybercab is Elon Musk's line from the We,Robot event on October 10, 2024: an operating cost of around $0.20 per mile, per TechCrunch. Two things have moved since we first wrote that down. The car is real: the first steering-wheel-less Cybercab came off the Giga Texas line in February 2026 and continuous production began in April, with Musk telling investors "we have just started production of Cybercab," per Electrek, April 23, 2026. And the twenty-cent figure now has a public list of what's inside it — though not from Tesla. When ARK Invest modeled $0.20 per mile by 2030 as a fully loaded number covering energy, maintenance, cleaning, depreciation and insurance, Musk replied that it was "probably true" on January 22, 2026.
That distinction matters if you are building a budget. What the categories are is now on the record. What each one costs is not. Tesla has never published a dollar breakdown, ARK's version is a model of 2030 at scale rather than a measurement of a car running today, and two words of agreement from the CEO is an endorsement, not a disclosure. We quote the number because everyone does; we label it because most don't.

Tires deserve the emphasis. A set that lasts 30,000 miles under commercial mileage stops being a footnote and becomes the largest routine line in the budget — potentially several sets a year. The honest counterpoint: the Cybercab is unusually light, with a 3,113-lb curb weight in its June 2026 EPA filing — see our spec breakdown — and tire wear scales with weight and torque, so a rule of thumb drawn from heavier cars may bend in its favor. That's physics, not data. Nobody has proven it yet.
The closest thing to robotaxi data that exists
No purpose-built robotaxi has a public maintenance ledger, so high-mileage fleet Teslas are the nearest proxy. Three worth knowing:
Tesloop's Model S: 300,000 miles on $10,492. The shuttle company put 300,000 miles on a Model S in about 2.5 years for $10,492 in total maintenance and charging — roughly $6,900 scheduled and $3,500 unscheduled, per CleanTechnica's September 2017 breakdown. Two asterisks: tires were excluded, and charging was free Supercharging.
The same car at 400,000 miles: ~$19,000. By CleanTechnica's July 2018 follow-up, total costs were around $19,000 — but battery packs were replaced at 194,000 and 324,000 miles and a front drive unit at 36,000, all under warranty. The headline number is real. So is the fact that the warranty absorbed the most expensive failures a fleet car can have.
The 255,000-mile Uber Model 3. InsideEVs profiled a Model 3 with an LFP pack that crossed 255,000 miles of rideshare duty in August 2025: 88–90% battery health, original motor and pack, motor mounts the only notable wear repair. What that implies for lifespan and residual value is its own question.
The line item nobody budgets: cleaning
The only operator with a visible cleaning operation is Waymo. It runs around a dozen maintenance and charging lots in San Francisco alone, where vehicles are cleaned regularly plus ad hoc whenever interior cameras spot a mess, per a spokesperson quoted by the SF Standard in October 2023. Inside its largest depot, contractors handle interior cleaning, charging, brake and fluid work, and sensor swaps for hundreds of robotaxis, per Business Insider's February 2026 tour. Waymo's own FAQ promises riders "a clean vehicle" — and publishes no cadence and no cost.
A private car gets dirty at the pace of one household. A rideshare car that seats strangers 20+ times a day gets dirty on a schedule no private car does — and a driverless one has nobody up front to notice. Someone has to reset the interior every day, forever, alongside the charging that also doesn't do itself. That reset job is most of the reason depots exist.
What the models say — and they are models
Goldman Sachs' April 2026 robotaxi outlook projects total cost of goods per mile falling below $1 by 2035, with depreciation dropping from $0.35 to $0.14 per mile. That's all-in cost, not maintenance alone — and it's a forecast.
An independent analyst model from February 2026 (Taha Abbasi) pencils maintenance at $0.03–$0.05 per mile plus cleaning and fleet management at another $0.03–$0.05. An estimate, not measured data — but notice the shape: the cleaning line is as big as the maintenance line. That matches everything above.
What this means for an owner's P&L
Per-mile maintenance on an EV is small. Robotaxi miles are not. A commercial car burns through tire sets, cleanings, and inspections at a pace that turns cheap per-mile numbers into real monthly money — which is why our worked monthly P&L carries maintenance as a named cost line at every duty cycle.

What nobody knows yet
- No Cybercab maintenance schedule or parts pricing exists — every schedule above is a Model 3 proxy.
- Musk's $0.20 per mile has no published dollar breakdown — ARK's 2030 model names the categories and Musk called it "probably true" on January 22, 2026, but Tesla has never itemized what each one costs.
- Waymo has never disclosed per-mile maintenance or cleaning costs — the one operator with real data publishes none of it.
- Cybercab tire life is unproven — plausible physics awaiting a single data point.
- Sensor and compute repair costs at high mileage are unknown — a wear category private cars don't have.

Do robotaxis need oil changes?
No. A battery-electric robotaxi has no engine oil, and Tesla's official Model 3 maintenance schedule — the closest published proxy for a Cybercab — lists no oil changes at all: tire rotation every 6,250 miles, cabin air filter every 2 years, brake fluid test every 4 years, A/C desiccant every 6 years. What takes the oil change's place on a commercial robotaxi is tires, which wear fast at high mileage, and cleaning, which happens on a cadence no private car needs.
How much does it cost to maintain a Tesla per year?
