What can a Cybercab be used for?
Short answer
A Cybercab is a two-seat, driverless electric car built for short, frequent trips. Its default job is ride-hailing on Tesla’s Robotaxi network, the only use Tesla has described apart from a passing mention of service loaners on its Q2 2026 earnings call. Beyond it, the car fits any repeatable point-to-point trip for one or two people with light cargo: hotel and resort guest shuttles, airport transfers, event and convention runs, employee and campus circulators, medical appointment rides, parcel drops and neighborhood connectors. It does not fit groups of three, wheelchair users without a mixed fleet, or a family’s luggage.
As of September 2026 none of these uses is available to a private owner, because no privately owned Cybercab is in service anywhere. This page is about what the car can do once that changes, and which door each use comes through.

Where we stand first: DockDuty is building a depot for privately owned Cybercabs, no depot of ours is open, and two of the uses below are lines we intend to run ourselves. Everything here is either a fact you can check or a description of how a use would work, labeled as one or the other.
Start with what the car is
Every use on this page follows from four design facts. The Cybercab has two seats and no third row, no steering wheel and no pedals, a 47.6 kWh pack rated at roughly 293 miles in the June 2026 EPA filing, wireless charging with no charge port, and 20.2 cubic feet of rear cargo space with a 220-pound limit, per Tesla’s rider guide. Tesla’s stated price target is under $30,000, a target rather than a price. The full sheet, with each figure dated, is in the Cybercab specs post.
Read those four together and the car’s shape is obvious. It is a machine for the short urban trip that most ride-hail rides already are, made cheap by leaving out everything that trip does not need. Tesla’s own explanation of the two seats, and what they cost in airport and group trips, is in why the Cybercab has two seats. Any use that looks like “one or two people, a bag or two, a few miles, over and over” is a fit. Any use that needs a third seat, a ramp or a human is not.
The ten uses, compared
The table is the summary; the sections after it say what each use actually involves. “Live today” means a robotaxi of any make is doing it commercially somewhere in the US, not that a Cybercab is.

“Live today” reflects what we could verify as of September 12, 2026. It changes monthly; the date at the top of the page is the one to trust.
1. Ride-hail on Tesla’s network
The default, and the only one with a confirmed mechanism. Tesla’s Robotaxi app dispatches Tesla-owned cars in a handful of metros, the rider pays a base fare plus a per-mile rate, and the car returns to a Tesla depot between rides. What Tesla has never published is how a privately owned car joins, on what revenue split, with what insurance. Every other use on this page exists partly because an owner cannot assume this one will be open to them on good terms.
2. Hotel and resort guest shuttles
A hotel courtesy shuttle is a fixed loop between a property and two or three places its guests go: the airport, a convention center, a theme park entrance. It runs whether anyone is on it, and it runs on a driver’s schedule. A two-seat robotaxi turns that loop into on-demand pairs of rides, which suits couples and solo business travellers and does not suit a family of four with checked bags. The property pays under contract, and the contract is where the two-seat problem gets solved: a mixed fleet, or a fallback to a larger vehicle for the trips the Cybercab cannot take. 3. Airport transfers
The trip shape is ideal and the access is the hard part. Airports control their own curbs through commercial ground-transportation permits and per-trip fees. Waymo and Zoox each reached an airport curb through airport-specific approvals; Tesla’s Orlando service zone, as of this writing, excludes MCO’s terminals, and its Austin map is reported to cover the airport with no agreement documented. A privately owned Cybercab on an airport run would depend on whichever network dispatches it having that permission. 4. Events, conventions and venues
Event transport is a demand spike with a known start and end: a convention lets out, a concert ends, forty thousand people want a ride in the same half hour. Human-driven fleets handle it with surge pricing and queues. A robotaxi fleet handles it with staging, a pre-positioned pool of cars a few minutes from the venue, and designated pickup zones the venue agrees to. A Cybercab’s two seats are no handicap here; most event groups are pairs. Tesla’s own fleet interest form, opened September 3, 2026, lists “event collaboration” as one of four interests it asks about. 5. Employee and campus shuttles
Hospitals bus staff from remote parking lots. Corporate campuses run loops between buildings. Universities run late-night safe-ride services that are, trip for trip, exactly a two-seat robotaxi ride. These are closed-loop contracts with a single payer and predictable hours, which makes them attractive to an operator and simple to price. They are also the least glamorous use on this page and probably the one that arrives first, because nothing about them depends on the public.
6. Medical and appointment rides
Non-emergency medical transport is a large, contracted market: rides to dialysis, therapy and follow-up appointments, paid by a health plan or a broker rather than the rider. A two-seat robotaxi fits the ambulatory share of it, the patient who can walk to the car, and fits none of the rest. Any operator in this market needs accessible vehicles alongside, which is a fleet-mix question and a contracting question rather than a Cybercab question.
7. Parcel and small-cargo runs
Tesla has not described the Cybercab as a delivery vehicle. It is one anyway: a locked, driverless car with a cargo area can move a box across town as easily as a passenger, and a fleet that is idle between 10pm and 6am is a fleet that can move boxes. This is one of the two lines DockDuty intends to run itself, in the second year of depot operations, for cars whose owners switch them to our dispatch during off-peak hours. It is planned, not live.
8. Community circulators
Master-planned communities already run autonomous shuttles. Lake Nona in Orlando has had Beep’s Move Nona shuttle service since 2019; Babcock Ranch near Fort Myers piloted driverless shuttles in 2018. Those are low-speed, fixed-route, multi-seat vehicles, which is the opposite design choice from a Cybercab, and the two are complements rather than competitors: the shuttle does the loop, the robotaxi does the door-to-door trip the loop cannot. DockDuty has no relationship with Beep; it is named here as the local precedent.
9. Paratransit and microtransit feeders
Transit agencies pay contractors per ride for paratransit and for the last mile to a rail or bus station, which is why the use appears on our operators page. The honest caveat is that paratransit is, by definition, largely riders a two-seat car with no ramp cannot carry. The Cybercab fits the feeder half of this use and only the ambulatory share of the paratransit half.
10. Personal transport for the owner
Can you just ride in your own Cybercab? Tesla’s price target is a consumer number, and its September 2026 fleet interest form asks about future Cybercab fleet purchasing, but the car has no steering wheel and can only be ridden where a driverless vehicle is legal to operate. In Florida and Texas that question is settled by statute; in most states it is not. Where each state stands is in robotaxi laws by state. Whether Tesla will let an owner summon their own car for a personal trip, and whether that trip counts against network availability, is one of the many owner-program terms Tesla has not published.
What a Cybercab is bad at
The list is short and it is the same list every time, so it is worth stating once rather than hedging every use above.
- Groups of three or more. Two seats means two riders. A mixed fleet dispatches a larger vehicle for the rest; a Cybercab-only fleet turns the trip down.
- Luggage beyond a couple of bags. Tesla’s rider guide lists 20.2 cubic feet of rear cargo space with a 220-pound limit, room for a couple’s bags and not for a family’s. Tesla’s own answer for riders who need more space is a Model Y on the same network. Airport and hotel uses feel this most.
- Wheelchair users. No ramp, no securement. Any contracted shuttle service has to offer an equivalent accessible ride, which means another vehicle in the fleet, not a modified Cybercab.
- Long distance. Roughly 293 rated miles is plenty for a day of short trips and wrong for an intercity run that ends far from a charger the car can use.
- Anything a driver does besides drive. A hotel shuttle driver loads bags and answers questions. A robotaxi does neither. Some of that moves to the app and the curb; some of it is simply gone.
The three doors an owner’s car can go through
A privately owned Cybercab reaches any of the uses above through one of three arrangements, and the distinction matters more than the use itself.
Door one
Tesla’s network
Tesla dispatches the car, sets the fare, takes a cut and decides which trips it serves. The owner does nothing but keep the car ready. Terms unpublished.
Door two
A captive contract
A hotel, hospital, employer or venue contracts for the car’s hours directly. Predictable revenue, no surge, and a fleet operator running the cars out of a depot.
Door three
An operator’s own line
A depot operator dispatches owner cars on its own routes during hours the network does not want them. DockDuty’s planned parcel and hotel lines are this door.
One car cannot be behind two doors at once. In DockDuty’s design the owner switches the car between Tesla’s network and ours from the dashboard, peak hours on theirs and off-peak on ours, and the dashboard records which network each trip ran on. That switch is built; the line it switches to is not yet running.
Does a shuttle contract beat ride-hail?
Sometimes, and the reason is variance rather than rate. Here is the shape of the comparison, with every input labeled an assumption; it is an illustration of the trade, not a forecast of anyone’s earnings.
- Network day (assumption). Our derived figure for a busy robotaxi is roughly 23 to 24 paid rides a day (the division is shown here). The first rider-reported Cybercab fare was $9.65 for a 15-minute Austin ride. Twenty rides at that fare is $193 gross before Tesla’s unpublished cut and before any depot fee.
- Contract day (assumption). A property contracts the car for a 16-hour line at a flat daily rate. The rate is a negotiation, but it is set against what the property pays for a driven shuttle today, which is the number that decides it.
- The difference. The network day is higher on a good day and lower on a wet Tuesday, and the owner carries that swing. The contract day is the same every day, and the property carries the swing. An owner with a loan payment tends to value the second more than the spreadsheet says.
The reason an operator wants both is that they stack. A car on a hotel line from 6am to 10pm and on parcel runs overnight is a car with no idle hours, which is the whole economic argument for a depot in the first place. DockDuty’s role

DockDuty is building a third-party depot for privately owned Cybercabs, targeted for Orlando in Q4 2026; that is a target, not a date, and no depot of ours is open. Uses 2, 3 and 4 above are the captive-contract door, which we sell to properties and operators today through the operators page and would run out of that depot. Uses 2 and 7 are also the two lines we plan to dispatch ourselves in the depot’s second year. Use 1 is the default for every car on our dock, and it depends on Tesla publishing owner terms it has not published.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Cybercab be used as a shuttle?
Yes, for the share of shuttle trips that are one or two people with light bags, which covers most hotel, campus and event runs. It cannot carry a group of three, a wheelchair user or a family’s checked luggage, so a shuttle service built on Cybercabs needs larger or accessible vehicles alongside for those trips. No Cybercab shuttle is operating anywhere as of September 2026.
Can a Cybercab deliver packages?
Nothing about the car prevents it: it is a locked, driverless vehicle with a cargo area, and an idle overnight fleet is well suited to moving parcels. Tesla has not described the Cybercab as a delivery vehicle, and no such service exists today. DockDuty plans a parcel line for owner cars during off-peak hours in the second year of depot operations.
Can I use my own Cybercab for personal trips?
Only where a driverless vehicle is legal to operate, which is settled by statute in Florida and Texas and unsettled in most other states, and only on whatever terms Tesla sets for owners, which it has not published. Whether a personal trip would count against the car’s network availability is one of the unanswered owner-program questions.
Which Cybercab uses are available right now?
None, to a private owner, because no privately owned Cybercab is in service. Among robotaxis generally, ride-hail is live in several metros with fleet-owned cars, Waymo picks up at four airports and Zoox at Las Vegas under airport-specific approvals, and Waymo is the official ride partner of a Las Vegas stadium. Hotel use has one precedent, a resort naming a robotaxi operator its official partner with a pickup zone. Campus, medical and parcel uses have no commercial robotaxi service behind them yet.
Can a Cybercab do ride-hail and shuttle work on the same day?
Yes, but not at the same time. The car is on one dispatcher at a time. In DockDuty’s design the owner switches the car between Tesla’s network for peak hours and DockDuty’s own line for off-peak hours from the dashboard, and each trip is recorded against the network it ran on. The switch exists; DockDuty’s line does not run yet.
